Bond rules in question as Maryland grapples with opinions

Each year thousands of people are held on bond — pretrial detention — in Maryland at a cost of millions of dollars, but that could change if judicial officials have to consider a defendant's financial circumstances in setting bond. Bond rules are on the agenda for a meeting of the Maryland Judiciary's Standing Committee on Rules of Practice and Procedure on Friday, Nov. 18. The committee will be hearing recommendations of a subcommittee, according to Hagerstown attorney Ira C. Cooke, who is also a lobbyist for the bail bonds industry in Maryland, a group that opposes changing the current rules. more
