FDA approves first treatment for form of skin cancer

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced it has granted accelerated approval to Bavencio for the treatment of patients with metastatic Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC). This is the first FDA-approved treatment for the rare and aggressive form of skin cancer. "While skin cancer is one of the most common cancers, patients with a rare form called Merkel cell cancer have not had an approved treatment option until now," said Dr. Richard Pazdur, MD, acting director of the Office of Hematology and Oncology Products in FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research and director of FDA's Oncology Center of Excellence. more
