ACSM Scores Big with Its Capitol Hill Day and Policy Team

On Tuesday of last week in Washington, D.C., the ACSM Health and Science Policy Committee met to discuss the latest legislative activities on Capitol Hill and around the country. As part of that meeting, they received a private briefing by a partner, the Bipartisan Policy Center, regarding U.S. health care overall and the proposed American Health Care Act. On Tuesday evening, ACSM staged a large Capitol Hill reception in conjunction with the Sports & Fitness Industry Association, which included Members of Congress, private and public sector leaders and sports celebrities such as Herschel Walker and Carl Lewis. On Wednesday Herschel and Carl and other athletes participated in our visits to the offices of Members of Congress. With concerns about the American Health Care Act from many quarters, it was withdrawn last Friday, ACSM efforts are now underway to ensure that any future approaches to U.S. health care policy changes have a bipartisan emphasis on including prevention and active and healthy lifestyles in multiple settings, from medical to worksite.

The Health and Science Policy Committee is developing an even more comprehensive policy and advocacy agenda that reflects the multi-disciplinary composition of ACSM. A key aim, for instance, is to combat the major budget cuts and consolidations that have been proposed for the National Institutes of Health. This agenda includes five general categories of (1) medical, health care and public health; (2) biological and biomedical research and physical activity; (3) budget and appropriations; (4) sports and sports medicine; and (5) state and city policies. Regular updates will occur as priorities are refined.
