NSPS attends USGS presentation on elevation data's relation to infrastructure

from NSPS

Last week, NSPS lobbyist John "JB" Byrd attended the Congressional Hazard Caucus briefing on "Saving Lives Through Hazards Mapping And Monitoring." Natural hazards affect every state in the nation. Earthquakes, volcanoes, landslides, tsunamis, hurricanes and other hazards, result in billions of dollars in annualized losses to the United States. These hazards threaten lives and property, disrupt services, damage infrastructure and threaten economies. Mapping and monitoring of these hazards is a proven way to effectively save lives and protect our nation's infrastructure. Attendees learned how geologic and hazards mapping and monitoring are used to prepare and protect our communities from natural hazards. The USGS presentation, "Saving Lives and Protecting Infrastructure Through Foundational Mapping," focused on the importance of elevation data, such as data collected from LiDAR and the 3D Elevation Program (3DEP), for infrastructure planning, design and resiliency. more
