How about some FREE resources?

from By: Matt Barclay, MSEd, LCPC

As I attend and exhibit at various conferences around the country, I notice that by the second day, many attendees making their way through the exhibit hall look a little weary. It reminds me of what I feel when I go shopping for presents during busy gift-giving times of the year and I walk into store after store and am approached by eager salespersons effectively doing their jobs. After a few stores of well-crafted sales pitches, I find myself avoiding eye contact with the salespersons because I just want to find what I am there for and get out. I wonder if some conference goers feel the same way at times. As an exhibitor for the Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center (Clerc Center) in Washington, D.C., I have the unique privilege of giving away all of our materials and resources for free. The Clerc Center is 100% federally funded and is charged with providing free training and technical assistance for any educator, administrator, professionals, or parent/guardian around the country working with a deaf or hard of hearing child, birth through grade 12, including students with cochlear implants.

Historically, the Clerc Center has enjoyed great relationships with the state schools for the deaf around the country because they are easy to find and we know the key players. But a whopping 86% of our deaf and hard of hearing students are in your programs, creating a challenge for us with regards to identifying and reaching the teachers and professionals who serve them.

We have been exhibiting at CEC for the last several years with the explicit goal of building relationships with you, the gatekeepers of special education services. Our hope is to find a way to get our free resources into the hands of the people who need them. I hope you will stop by our booth at CEC (#926) and check out our free resources. Together, we can talk about how your district is structured and how we might collaborate to better serve deaf and hard of hearing students in your district. You can also come prepared to ask us questions by checking out our website. We look forward to seeing you at CEC this week!
