Sleep saved by the bell? Superintendent asks MCPS board to study late school start time

After a lackluster response to call for public comment on pushing back school start times, Missoula County Public School Board of Trustees directed the MCPS administration to begin examining a later starting time for high school students. At a board meeting in April, Superintendent Mark Thane announced the findings of a school start time committee, which had spent the year researching a delayed start time for high school students in Missoula County Public Schools. The committee looked at whether there was a compelling reason to make an effort to implement a later time. Thane acknowledged the many hurdles to the implementation — including rescheduling after-school activities and transportation — but research by the white paper committee showed the change could have significant health benefits for MCPS high school students. more
