Haunted by a player's death, a coach walks away from his sport

Jeff Charles, a former high school football coach, had tried to come to the football field twice in recent years but could not bring himself to go farther than the parking lot. One day recently he made his way down the winding ramp from the parking lot and onto the turf. Charles, 49, the former head varsity football coach at John C. Birdlebough High School in Phoenix, New York, was on the sideline at Homer High School, about 30 miles south of Syracuse, on a Friday night in October 2011 when one of his players sustained a fatal brain injury.
