Demand surges for Mexican laborers

Demand for temporary laborers under the H-2A agricultural visa program is up 20 percent for the first nine months of the fiscal year, according to the U.S. Labor Department. Since the beginning of the fiscal year on Oct. 1, the labor department certified more than 160,000 temporary workers, with the bulk of the being from Mexico, to harvest agricultural crops such as berries and tobacco — an increase of 20 percent from the year prior. more
