Playing sick: Standardized patients help nursing students learn

from Abilene Reporter-News

Norma Jones was admitted to Tech General Hospital Wednesday after suffering a stroke, shortly after calling a neighbor to tell her she needed help. Students from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Nursing interviewed and interacted with Jones – all 10 of her – for eight hours, providing total patient care. A retired widow who lives alone with six cats, has two sons with whom she only has limited contact, and who has smoked a half-pack of cigarettes a day for 20 years, Jones was portrayed by 10 “standardized patients,” individuals who take on the role of an ill person to help students practice physical exam skills, history-taking skills, communication and other exercises. more
