Several generations ago, medicine was considered an art; around the turn of the 20th century, medicine became an art supported by scientific principles; after World War II, medicine became a business composed of artists and scientists but actually controlled by lawyers and businessmen. Modern medicine in the United States is big business, and the business model approach to running hospitals, research facilities, and medical schools is what we now do.
