Centennial of the Halifax Explosion — Tree Lighting Ceremony

Thursday, Nov. 30, 2017 | Boston Common | 7-8 p.m.
Boston and Halifax will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the terrible disaster that followed when the French ship SS Mt Blanc loaded with munitions struck the SS Imo, a Norwegian ship, as they passed each other in the harbor at 9:05 am of Dec. 6, 1917. The explosion is said to have been the largest non-nuclear blast ever recorded. Within one and a half minutes 1800 people were killed with another 9000 severely injured. Halifax never forgot Boston’s response to their disaster and in gratitude each year provides Boston Common with its Christmas tree.
