Message from President Thompson: ACSM's Response to Recent Hurricanes and Devastation

After Hurricane Harvey came ashore in Texas and Louisiana, we hoped that we had seen the last of these natural disasters. Then came Hurricanes Irma and Maria. Once again, we saw the devastation that hurricanes can have on people just like us. We mourn together for those who died and pray for the healing of those who were injured.

But thoughts and prayers are not enough. ACSM has always reacted in positive ways to these natural disasters, and today is no different. We urge ACSM members to donate to one of the many relief organizations that will directly impact those affected by the terrible devastation. The American Red Cross (http://www.redcross.org/) and United Way (https://www.unitedway.org/) are just two examples. We may not know for sure how these hurricanes have affected our members and their families for some time to come. We do know that they need our help now.

ACSM is asking that university administrators consider waiving some portion of tuition and fees for students who had to flee their communities. We also request that colleges and universities consider opening unused dorm rooms for those who have been displaced, and ask that these same institutions consider a visiting scholar program to help displaced professors and clinicians. Finally, we’re asking ACSM members affiliated with these institutions to step up and welcome our affected colleagues into their homes until they are back on their feet.

ACSM members and families in all the affected areas should know that ACSM will be there with you every step of the way.
