Message from the President Beth Chapman

from PBUS

Dear Members and Colleagues:

It is with a heavy heart that I must announce the passing of one of the giants of our industry, Dudley Goolsby, Jr. from Oklahoma. Dudley was a true gentleman, a savvy businessman, a great mentor, and a dear friend and he will be missed.

Dudley entered the bail industry in 1976 and it became his full time profession in 1984. In 1986 the Oklahoma bail industry was rocked with a huge scandal that put Oklahoma taxpayers on the hook for tens of thousands of forfeiture dollars and nearly caused the elimination of the bail bond industry. Still fresh in the business, Dudley and a small group of bondsmen met to save the industry. They formed the Oklahoma Bondsman Association (OBA) and negotiated with lawmakers and the Insurance Commission to fix the issues that led to the scandal and intimately saved the professions of hundreds in the process.

Following the creation of the OBA, Dudley was elected President of the association in 1988 and immediately started working to legitimize the bail industry in Oklahoma and increase the level of professionalism across the board. He would serve in that capacity until 2003 then again from 2014 until now. His realization of those endeavors are evident in the success and reputation of the Oklahoma bail industry and it would not go to far to state that these were a direct result of his dynamic leadership and shrewd business skills.

Dudley's success launched nationally as he became a member of PBUS in 1989, was recognized as the Bail Agent of the Year in 1996, and was inducted into the PBUS Hall of Fame in 2011. He was a consistent source of support and leadership for the bail industry nationally and served as President of PBUS from 2004-2005. Every year since then he has served on the council of presidents, the board of directors, many other leadership roles, or any task asked of him. He was a constant defender of our agents and our industry and a dedicated commander in the war against bail reform. I cannot express how much I will miss his knowledge, experience, and advice which he blessed me with over the years. We were truly fortunate to have had him among our ranks.

When working with or getting to know Dudley it didn't take long before he talked about his family. He was a devoted husband to his wife Nadine and caring father and grandfather. In a time where many push their families aside for success and achievement Dudley was the example of Godly leadership and the ability to balance professional achievement with personal prosperity. This was quite evident in both the level of success in his professional life and personal happiness in his family and the love and respect they have for him. Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers as they mourn this loss.

I was told that Dudley went to the office this morning like he had for over 40 years and collapsed in the elevator. He died as he lived, working hard, providing for his family, serving others, and doing what he loved and what he was good at. Let us take his example as the world would benefit from more of who Dudley Goolsby was. His legacy is already etched in stone, let us now etch it in our hearts and never forget a great man who we were blessed to have in our lives. more
