About ADAA's Social Anxiety Special Interest Group (SIG)

Since forming, just over a year ago, the Social Anxiety Special Interest Group (SIG) has organized many opportunities for learning and consultation. There have been monthly online peer consultations, open to all ADAA members. These have been attended by members across the country, with rich discussions about cases and current treatments for social anxiety. The SIG has put on various webinars, including two on CBT for social anxiety, another on evidence based group treatment for social anxiety, and another geared towards consumers about overcoming their social anxiety.

The SIG held a breakfast meeting at ADAA's Conference last year, resulting in interesting case discussions and a great networking opportunity. This year, the SIG will also hold at the Washington, D.C., Conference. As part of their participation in the SIG, two of the leaders will be presenting different workshops at the conference on social anxiety related topics.

Meet the Social Anxiety SIG Chairs and Vice-Chairs

Noah Clyman LCSW-R
, is the director of NYC Cognitive Therapy, a group practice in Manhattan which specializes in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Trial-Based Cognitive Therapy (TBCT). NYCCT's mission is to make quality, culturally-competent CBT available to the public, and NYCCT is first CBT center that places particular emphasis on diversity, serving populations such as the LGBTQ community, and those living with HIV/AIDS. Noah's team of expertly trained CBT clinicians offers cutting edge treatment that is tailor-made for the client's circumstances. The clinicians at NYCCT teach clients tools they can use throughout their life to improve mood and solve problems. Treatment is time-limited and goal oriented, to provide solutions for their anxiety, depression, or relationship issues. Noah is also a Board member of the National Social Anxiety Center (NSAC), and NSAC created and leads the ADAA SIG.

"I decided to help lead the social anxiety SIG because social anxiety is a highly prevalent problem we see in our practice, and it is also a problem that is highly treatable. When clients get the right therapy for their social anxiety, in as quickly as 12-16 sessions, they learn the skills to take back their life and aren't hijacked by fear any longer. I am delighted and honored to have a partnership with NSAC and ADAA."

Lauren Neaman, PsyD, is the Chief Clinical Officer at The Depression and Anxiety Specialty Clinic of Chicago, where she has been since 2013. She treats individuals with anxiety disorders, with special interests in OCD, social anxiety disorder, and panic disorder. Dr. Neaman also supervises graduate students and junior staff in cognitive behavioral therapy. Dr. Neaman serves as the Chicago based Board Member for the National Social Anxiety Center (NSAC). She is also a Diplomate with the Academy of Cognitive Therapy.

"I am pleased to be co-chairing the social anxiety SIG for ADAA. Since choosing to research soc more
