Using vans for some school transport raises concerns in Holyoke but officials tout safety, savings

The union representing workers at Durham School Services said the public schools' plan to begin using vans instead of buses to transport some students jeopardizes safety and jobs. But school officials said neither safety nor jobs will be reduced with the change to vans, which are already in use in a limited way here and in other school districts, and the switch will save money. The change to vans is for "diverse learners" who meet the criteria for transportation services and have transportation services in their Individualized Education Plan. This includes students in wheelchairs, officials said. more
