Trump Signs Tariffs on Steel and Aluminum

from NDA

Yesterday, President Trump signed an order imposing tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, excluding Canada and Mexico. Taking effect in 15 days, the steel tariff is 25% and the aluminum tariff is 10%. Certain allied countries will have the ability to negotiate out of the tariffs with the United States Trade Representative (USTR).

Trump’s initial announcement about the tariffs in March of last year caused concern from some industries who were concerned about job losses from the across-the-board tariffs and retaliatory actions by nations affected. Republican lawmakers were quick to criticize the president's decision Thursday and have stated they will look into what Congress is able to do in response to Trump’s decision.

NDA is currently discussing the potential impact of the tariffs on membership and is formulating a position in order to discuss these with Congress and the Administration as the process moves forward. For questions, contact Kevin McKenney at more
