Do You Know the History of Your Profession?

from GBA

In April 1988 Ralph B. Peck presented an extensive history of what would later be called the geoprofessions when he delivered a presentation titled Growing Pains of a New Profession, Soil Mechanics 1925-1940. In the presentation he emphasizes the practice of soil mechanics, which later evolved into geotechnical engineering did not start in the United States as the result of any single event. He highlights world events, lists milestone projects, and identifies key leaders that are responsible for the development of the geoprofessions.

Thirty years later, geoprofessions now include various technical disciplines that involve engineering, earth and environmental services applied to below-ground ("subsurface"), ground-surface, and ground-surface-connected conditions, structures, or formations. The principal disciplines include geotechnical engineering; geology and engineering geology; geological engineering; environmental science and environmental engineering; construction-materials engineering and testing; and other geoprofessional services.

GBA captured the text of Dr. Peck's presentation in an informative and educational monograph available FREE for all member-firms.
