County Commissioner supports a SIP affordable housing project in hurricane ravaged Florida Keys

Keys Weekly's Katie Atkins filed a story April 27, 2018 exposing the housing crisis facing the Florida Keys made more urgent by recent hurricane damage. Attorney Bart Smith spoke on behalf of the land trust and said he’s been tasked with rectifying the affordable housing issue that was in place before Hurricane Irma and "exponentially magnified" by the storm.

The Board of County Commissioners met and approved funding for four SIP based homes to be built on county owned land and then offered for rent. SIPA's Executive Director, Jack Armstrong, visited the active construction site recently to offer support to George Neugent, County Commissioner.

The SIP panels are being manufactured by SIPA member Insulspan and Al Cobb of PanelWrights is supervising the installation. Three of the four units already have their building permits, SIPA will be following the progress of these homes as they are constructed, the first home could be completed by the end of June and the other three could possibly be built by the end of July.
