Commercial/Industrial/Institutional over 10,000 sq. ft. Category Winner — Skokomish Community Center

The Skokomish Community Center is designed to promote community wellness by supporting the tribe's youth and elder programs, which include holiday parties, general council meetings, funerals, basketball tournaments, cultural classes and other events, and can also serve as shelter during an emergency. The Center has a gymnasium, meeting hall, commercial kitchen, dining room, fitness center, computer lab and space for culture and art classes for the Skokomish Tribal community.

The Skokomish Tribe wanted to be environmentally responsible and net-zero energy with this new, 22,000 sq. ft. gathering space so an energy efficiency envelope was critical in the design process. SIPs provided a welcome solution to achieve the design criteria for net-zero performance. The project was built by Pease Construction, Lakewood, WA. and designed by 7 Directions, Seattle, WA. SIP panels were manufactured by SIPA member Premier Building Systems.

SIP wall thickness: 8" (19,728 sq. ft.)
SIP roof thickness: 12" (28,280 sq. ft.)

Other considerations for using SIPs included ultra-low energy usage, speed of installation, reduction of jobsite waste, use of tribal labor crews (not previously trained on SIPs) and SIPs recyclability. The long spanning capability of the jumbo SIPs enabled efficient pairing with timber elements for the large soaring, open gymnasium space.
