"When we first started presenting our clinical results at meetings, there was a lot of skepticism,” says John D. Scandling, M.D., medical director of Stanford Adult Kidney and Pancreas Transplantation at the Stanford University Medical Center in Palo Alto, California. It was 2000, and Dr. Scandling and colleagues at Stanford had begun to use stem cell transplants to induce tolerance.
