FMCSA seeking input on several hours of service provisions

from PGANE

Last week, DOT's Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) issued an Advanced Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (ANPRM) in which the agency is seeking public input on possible changes to several existing provisions related to its drivers' Hours of Service (HOS) requirements. An ANPRM is not an actual proposal, but an effort by DOT to solicit stakeholder input on these provisions.

The four specific areas in which FMCSA is seeking input pertain to a) short-haul operations, b) the HOS exception for adverse driving conditions, c) the 30-minute rest break provision, and d) the sleeper berth rule to allow drivers to split their required time in the sleeper berth.

Recognizing the importance of HOS regulations to our industry, please provide any feedback or comments you may have on any areas of this ANPRM to Sarah Reboli or Mike Caldarera. NPGA will be coordinating our industry response to the ANPRM through our Regulatory and Compliance Task Force of the Governmental Affairs Committee and your input will help facilitate that effort. For a complete list of questions and more details on the agency's request, please see the ANPRM. Comments on the ANPRM are due by Sept. 24. more
