As bond reform spreads, North Carolina has its own approach

Many people arrested in North Carolina's Alamance County need to put money down if they want to stay out of jail while they wait for trial, if they can afford it, which has become a national controversy that is growing in North Carolina. "There are offenses that require a secured bond, but a whole lot more that don't," said Thomas Maher, director of the N.C. Office of Indigent Defense Services, which provides lawyers for those who can't afford them. more
