2018 Advocacy Award Selection — Jennifer Bauer

from AEG Advocacy Committee

Jennifer Bauer, of Landslide Consultants PLLC, Asheville, North Carolina, has been selected by the AEG Advocacy Committee as the recipient of the first Advocacy Award. Jennifer has made significant contributions as a grass-roots advocate for geology, geologists, and their work.

In recent years, Jennifer has volunteered with the North Carolina Geological Survey to determine evacuation needs before the arrival of tropical depressions. She used Facebook to alert the public of coming heavy rains and the landslide risks they posed and worked with local emergency managers to identify areas having the highest landslide risk. Jennifer also has been a respected, technical resource for local television and newspapers and has been interviewed numerous times by reporters.

Jennifer has also carried her passion for the geosciences to Washington, D.C., Last year, she presented during a briefing organized by the U.S. Geological Survey for U.S. congressional members and their staffs on landslide hazards. In 2014, she also presented on landslide hazards to U.S. congressional members in a program organized by the Hazard Caucus Alliance.

Since 2011, Jennifer has spoken to more than 2,000 people in emergency management, local government, real estate organizations and civic groups on landslide hazards. She regularly provides technical input to emergency plans for local and regional disaster response communities.

The 2018 Advocacy Award will be presented to Jennifer at the Annual Meeting in San Francisco. It is planned that the Advocacy Award will be presented annually to the AEG member who best proactively promotes the value of geological practice among the general public and/or a legislative body.

The Advocacy Committee members are Eldon Gath, Stephen Semmens, Phyllis Steckel (Chairman) and Paul Weaver. more
