from SIO

At the forefront of our community, SIO’s founding members have changed the global face of IO by creating and investing in our society. We are lucky to have their support and guidance as this organization grows and thrives. Learn more about one of our founding members each week!

Ezana M. Azene, M.D., Ph.D.
Interventional Radiologist
Gundersen Health System

Dr. Azene completed medical school, graduate school, radiology residency training, and IR fellowship training at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland. He appreciates his training with excellent IO mentors, many of whom are widely considered pioneers of IO.

My expertise … I am certified by the American Board of Radiology in Diagnostic Radiology/Interventional Radiology. I have expertise in many areas of interventional radiology, including interventional oncology. Within IO, I have special interests in liver directed therapies, spine ablation, and image-guided interventions for cancer pain control.

I focused on IO because … IO is at the same time profoundly impactful in the lives of my patients and intellectually stimulating for me professionally. I enjoy developing close relationships with my patients and their loved ones over months or years as I help them treat (perhaps cure) and come to terms with a disease that is usually a major life-altering diagnosis.

I chose to support SIO because … The SIO mission statement says it all: "To advance Interventional Oncology (IO) as the fourth pillar of cancer therapy alongside medical, surgical, and radiation oncology worldwide." IO is a new field that needs people to support its growth and acceptance by the larger oncology community. Being a supporter of SIO is one way to help achieve that goal.

A goal of mine … My goal is to continue as an avid learner, practitioner, and advocate of IO.

A piece of advice … Be humble. Never hesitate to ask for help or advice. Develop a network of colleagues in IO and other oncology specialties to whom you can go for support. Asking for help and advice is one of the best ways to both learn and network. Being a member of organizations like SIO can help in that regard.

In my free time I enjoy … I enjoy spending time with my wife and 3 young children. We like to bike, travel, and watch movies. We are also very active in our church and enjoy entertaining friends at our house.
