A tribute: Reginald R. Wallace, F.CSCE

With sadness we report that our friend, Reg Wallace, passed away in Toronto on September 27, 2018. Reg had a wide ranging career as a civil engineer and more generally was a good citizen of the world.

Reg who was born in Montreal in 1933 was raised in Cardinal, Ontario, where his father was the Chief Engineer for the Canada Starch Company. It may explain Reg’s ongoing interest in the history of civil engineering as he was very aware that Walter Shanly, one of the founders of the Canada Starch Company, had contributed so much to the founding in 1887 of the Canadian Society of Civil Engineers. Reg attended Ridley College before enrolling in 1951 in the Royal Military College in Kingston, Ontario, graduating in 1955. As required at the time, to be registered as a professional engineer, he had to undertake one more year of studies which he did at the University of Toronto graduating with Honours. Reg was then awarded an Athlone Fellowship which enabled him to study Concrete Technology at Imperial College in London, England. more
