Joint report warns of increasing urban flooding

from The Eagle

Among the findings of a new report from Texas A&M University and the University of Maryland is that urban flooding is a growing occurrence across most of the United States, causing economic loss, social disruption and housing inequality. The study, Texas A&M University President Michael K. Young said in a press release, is a "wake-up call" about urban flooding — defined as the inundation of properties in developed areas caused by rainfall on increased amounts of impervious surfaces — that is "likewise enormously powerful" in its recommendations to approach the problem. The report attributes the cause of urban flooding to a number of factors, including aging and inadequate drainage systems, more runoff caused by an increase in impervious surfaces from new development, and sewage and stormwater backups. more
