Groups call on New York governor to provide more money to replace lead pipes

from WAMC-FM

A coalition of various organizations has sent a letter to New York Governor Andrew Cuomo. The request from the coalition of labor, local government and environmental organizations is to increase funding from $20 million to $100 million. Rob Hayes, clean water associate for Environmental Advocates of New York and one of the letter's signers, said the current $20 million allocation is a "drop in the bucket" compared to the number municipalities across the state need to solve the problem of lead in drinking water. By his estimate, the need to replace all 360,000 lead service lines in the state comes to "at least $1 billion." more
