Treating Mitral Regurgitation in High-risk Patients

from Diagnostic and Interventional Cardiology

Mitral regurgitation is one of the most common types of heart valve diseases in the United States, affecting approximately one in 10 adults age 75 and older. About 3 to 4 percent of the population has moderate to severe degenerative mitral regurgitation. A study by James Hermiller, MD, St. Vincent Heart Center of Indiana, presented at the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions 2018 Scientific Sessions, demonstrated an 81.7 percent freedom from all-cause mortality at one year and 83.4 percent improvement with NYHA I/II at the one-year mark after treatment with MitraClip. In addition, there was mean improvement of 37.9 meters in the six-minute walk test. more
