Massachusetts governor signs off on funds for gas system study

Gov. Charlie Baker has signed legislation allocating $1.5 million toward an independent review of the statewide natural gas distribution system. Funding for the review comes six months after overpressurization of gas lines triggered explosions and fires across three Merrimack Valley communities, killing a Lawrence teenager, injuring two dozen more, and damaging or destroying more than 100 homes. Massachusetts has the second-oldest leak-prone infrastructure in the country, according to Audrey Schulman of the Home Energy Efficiency Team, which tracks gas leaks. She previously told the Herald the pipes in Massachusetts — which include miles of outdated cast-iron — "are past their well-use dates." more
