#StandAFFIRM for Federally-Funded Research

We want to remind you that the AAEM Board of Directors has agreed to sponsor the American Foundation for Firearm Injury Reduction in Medicine, which is an organization founded by two emergency physicians as a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation comprised of healthcare professionals and researchers working together to find lasting solutions to curb the epidemic of firearm violence across the United States. AFFIRM funding goes directly to research that will inform protocols for everyone working on the frontlines of healthcare, develop innovative solutions that connect our network to other first responders and stakeholders, and create education and information for healthcare professionals and the public. Specifically, this funding does not address gun ownership, or the politics of the second amendment, but instead addresses research to increase the safety of firearm ownership and use, much in the way that we increased traffic safety through research. These efforts are consistent with the AAEM mission to protect the personal and professional welfare of the individual specialist in emergency medicine. As you know, the U.S. House recently recommended appropriating $50 million for firearm injury prevention research. Although AFFIRM is not an advocacy organization, the value of research is one of our core values. We also #StandAFFIRM in support of the unique importance of federally-funded research. This is how important public health issues of our time, including HIV, cancer, and car crashes, have been addressed. For this reason, AFFIRM has created an online petition. Sign the petition. more
