Save the date: Sept. 20 is Geologists Day

from AEG

Join the AEG community in celebrating Friday, Sept. 20, as "Geologists Day." It's a perfect time to acknowledge and be proud of the contributions and accomplishments of our profession — and all the things that make geologists unique.

Almost everything in our modern life has been "touched" by geologists. Some examples are energy, agriculture, public safety, mineral resources, environmental quality, the built environment, communication, technology, transportation, healthcare and pharmaceuticals, and much more. Specific examples include:
  • Modern, intense agriculture depends on fertilizers and soil amendments. Deposits of potash and other fertilizers are found and developed by geologists.
  • Buildings need steel and concrete, which depend on iron ore and sand and gravel deposits.
  • Much of our energy use comes from oil, gas and coal and some of it is from geothermal and nuclear plants. Oil, gas, coal, geothermal and uranium resources are found and developed by geologists.
  • Cellphones and computers need rare-earth elements, which are found and developed by geologists.
Be sure to mark Sept. 20 on your calendar to celebrate the accomplishments and continuing work of the geoscience community. Geoscience professionals are commemorated around the world; for example, Australia, Ukraine and other countries acknowledge Geoscientists Day on the first Sunday in April. "Collect Rocks Day" is each Sept. 16. And don't forget Earth Sciences Week in early October. more
