There's a Kind of Hush - as Aircraft Get Quieter from Airlines/Airport Examiner What’s hushing aircraft up? Much of the credit goes to quieter engines, “high-bypass” powerplants. High-bypass jet engines boost the percentage of air that flows through the powerplant, but not—and this is the critical element—through the engine’s combustor. That muffles the audible maelstrom considerably. FAA says since the late 1960s, aircraft noise levels have plummeted some 20 decibels. That renders commercial jet noise signatures about a fourth what they were 50 years ago. More
Bio-jet Fuel Plan Takes Off from Environmental Data Interactive Exchange The widespread introduction of bio-fuels in the aviation industry would result in carbon cuts worth billions to Europe, a think tank report says. The Policy Exchange report argues for an EU-wide mandate requiring the proportion of jet fuel from or blended with sustainable bio-jet fuel to start from 20 per cent in 2020 rising to 80 percent by 2050. Aviation Industry on Track to Deliver Certified Biofuel within Two Years from BusinessGreen The aviation industry is on target to certify the first jet biofuels for commercial use by 2011, according to a senior executive at one of the world's largest jet engine manufacturers. Alan H Epstein, vice president technology and environment at Pratt & Witney, told Businessgreen.com that the company was confident that the industry's efforts to develop biofuels were on track to attain the official certification new fuels require to be used commercially during 2011. AirTran Serves up 'Carbon Neutral' Bottled Water from Environmental Leader Airtran, a budget airline, may seem an unlikely place for such an extravagance as bottled water that has been certified carbon neutral. However, the airline is now serving Icelandic Glacial, a water featuring a bottle made of fully recyclable PET plastic from a Carbon Neutral certified bottler in Iceland. Airtran is selling the water at $2 a bottle, while it continues to serve Dasani water poured into a cup for free. More
Brisbane Airport Workers Pool their Resources for the Planet from PressZoom Brisbane Airport became the first airport in Australia to introduce a carpooling and sustainable travel program, aiming to significantly cut emissions and congestion at one of the country’s busiest airports. The Department of Transport and Main Roads joined forces with Brisbane Airport Corporation to establish Brisbane Airport Trippers – a carpooling and sustainable transport program for airport employees. Are Airline Emissions Harmful to Newport Beach in California? from the Daily Pilot Many Newport Beach residents in California have long wondered if the fine black grit that seems constantly to end up on their windows and patio furniture has anything to do with the jets taking off and landing at nearby John Wayne Airport. Until recently, technology that could gauge the amount of jet fuel emissions that come from the airport has not existed, said Newport Beach City Councilwoman Leslie Daigle. More

AAAE/O'Hare Airports Going Green Workshop
September 1 – 2, 2009 2:00-4:00 PM
AAAE Aircraft and Airfield Deicing and Stormwater Issues Webinar
REGISTRATION NOW OPEN!
Two sessions covering the soon-to-be issued EPA Effluent Limitation Guidelines proposed rule, airport case studies, and the ACRP Deicing report.
AAAE invites you to be a part of the 2009 AAAE Airports Energy Efficiency Forum. Based in last year’s success, AAAE is putting together the 2nd Annual Airports Energy Efficiency Conference, to take place in Seattle, WA on November 16-18, 2009. This year’s forum promises to be even bigger and better than 2008's!
Helping airports figure out how to employ the latest strategies and best practices to minimize/eliminate energy waste and optimize operations is the number one goal for this conference. “Going green” isn’t just a buzzword; it can also save you money and resources.
This forum will address basic ways that airports can save up to 30% with minimum investments: increase efficiency through the use of low-cost technology and equipment, improve facility design and efficiency, improve energy-related operations and maintenance, recommission facilities and controls for optimum comfort and energy use.
