Study: U.S. Can Cut Half its Carbon Emissions from Transportation by 2050 from The New York Times The United States can cut greenhouse gas emissions from transportation in half by 2050 with strategies ranging from cutting speed limits to imposing road pricing, according to a report released today by federal agencies and environmental and industry groups. High-bypass jet engines boost the percentage of air that flows through the powerplant, but not—and this is the critical element—through the engine’s combustor. That muffles the audible maelstrom considerably. FAA says since the late 1960s, aircraft noise levels have plummeted some 20 decibels. That renders commercial jet noise signatures about a fourth what they were 50 years ago. The Policy Exchange report argues for an EU-wide mandate requiring the proportion of jet fuel from or blended with sustainable bio-jet fuel to start from 20 per cent in 2020 rising to 80 percent by 2050. More Aviation Industry on Track to Deliver Certified Biofuel within Two Years from BusinessGreen The aviation industry is on target to certify the first jet biofuels for commercial use by 2011, according to a senior executive at one of the world's largest jet engine manufacturers. Alan H Epstein, vice president technology and environment at Pratt & Witney, told Businessgreen.com that the company was confident that the industry's efforts to develop biofuels were on track to attain the official certification new fuels require to be used commercially during 2011. More AirTran Serves up 'Carbon Neutral' Bottled Water from Environmental Leader Airtran, a budget airline, may seem an unlikely place for such an extravagance as bottled water that has been certified carbon neutral. However, the airline is now serving Icelandic Glacial, a water featuring a bottle made of fully recyclable PET plastic from a Carbon Neutral certified bottler in Iceland. Airtran is selling the water at $2 a bottle, while it continues to serve Dasani water poured into a cup for free.
