OA Braces: Did increased utilization contribute to billing code changes?
    Townsend Design
A growing percentage of Medicare patients with OA related knee pain and mobility limitations are being fit with off-the-shelf corrective knee braces. Following this increase in use, CMS has imposed new billing code requirements effective October 1, 2014. Statistics from 2012 indicate Medicare provided reimbursement for over 20,500 L1843 single hinge braces routinely prescribed for unicompartment OA. An additional 19,000 L1845 braces were reimbursed by Medicare. While these dual hinge (L1845) braces are prescribed for both ligament instabilities and knee OA, a majority of the L1845 braces paid for by Medicare are prescribed for older OA patients with joint degeneration.

How to improve patient care while increasing revenue
    Podiatry Today
As we prepare for the start of 2015 and the uncertainty of what is around the corner with accountable care organizations, ICD-10, decreasing reimbursements, hospital consolidations, hospitals purchasing referral sources and more, it is easy to get discouraged and give up. Many people will throw in the towel and just continue to see and treat their patients without trying to do anything to improve the practice or the practice revenue.

    Nurse coaching on the rise
    By Keith Carlson
The profession of coaching has been in existence for a number of years. While life coaching is the form of coaching with which the public is most familiar, nurses are now entering this burgeoning field in large numbers, in various aspects of the profession. 'America's Bitter Pill' makes case for why healthcare law 'won't work'
    NPR
Journalist Steven Brill, who was diagnosed with a life-threatening condition that required heart surgery, has written the book America's Bitter Pill about the political fights and the medical and pharmaceutical industry lobbying that made it difficult to pass any health care overhaul — and led to the compromises of the Affordable Care Act. The law enables millions more people to afford health insurance, he writes, but it also adds new layers of bureaucracy — and many confusing new regulations.

    The Arizona Republic
Arizona's legal battle over Medicaid expansion will be allowed to continue, the state Supreme Court ruled recently, meaning continued uncertainty for nearly 300,000 low-income Arizonans, the state budget and Arizona's hospitals. In a unanimous ruling, the high court permitted a challenge from 36 Republican state lawmakers to return to court for a decision on whether expansion of the state's health-insurance program for the poor was legally enacted.

Patient engagement may reduce healthcare reform anxiety
    EHR Intelligence
Adopting more robust patient engagement technologies may help providers and patients alike find their way out of pervasive anxieties about the future of the healthcare industry — if physicians can lead the way.
