    WITHIN YOUR PRACTICE WALLS

Food for thought: Exercise your optimism muscle
    By Karen Childress
If you routinely hear phrases like "Why are you so negative?" coming from people who know you well — your spouse, practice partner, office manager or even your children — it may be time to work on building up your optimism muscle. Deep-seated optimism goes beyond simply the ability to maintain a sunny, hopeful outlook on life. You can learn to be more optimistic and doing so, according to numerous studies, can result in improved health, better relationships with others and even greater longevity.

50 of the most powerful people in healthcare
    Becker's Hospital Review
The U.S. healthcare system is heading into one of its most monumental years in decades, as the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act will go into near-full motion. Many sectors in the healthcare industry have played major roles in shaping the system we have today: hospitals, health systems, physicians, nurses, health insurance companies, scientists, researchers, politicians, advocacy groups, lobbyists, journalists, Wall Streeters and more.

Young docs pick hospital jobs over private practices
    FierceHealthcare
Independent, private practices may play a smaller role in the future if young doctors continue the trend of working at hospitals instead of their own practices, according to the Kansas City Star. The change among the new generation of doctors is attributed to the appeal of flexible schedules and younger physicians making their personal lives a priority over career advancement. The movement also reflects the findings of a 2011 survey by recruitment firm Merritt Hawkins, which reported that senior medical residents rated hospital employment as their top career choice, with just one percent of new doctors saying they wanted their own practice.

Improper physician payments, kickbacks lead to big penalties
    EHRIntelligence.com
Inappropriate kickbacks to physicians led to million-dollar settlements for one health system and laboratory before the close of 2013. The most recent settlement involves St. James Healthcare in Butte, Mont., and its Denver-based parent company, Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth Health System agreeing to pay $3.85 million as a result of alleged violations of the Anti-Kickback Statute, the Stark Law and the False Claims Act, which they disclosed to the government.

Experts: Churning between Medicaid and exchanges could leave gaps in coverage
    The Washington Post
While government officials have spent months scrambling to fix the federal healthcare law's botched rollout, another issue is looming that could create new headaches for states, health plans — and patients. In 2014, millions of people are expected to shift between the health exchanges and Medicaid as their income fluctuates. That could be costly for states and insurance companies, and patients could wind up having gaps in coverage or having to switch health plans or doctors.

The group that got health reform passed is declaring victory and going home
    The Washington Post
It's hard to remember now, as the Affordable Care Act's biggest programs come into effect, but many central decisions regarding Obamacare's structure were made before anyone expected Barack Obama to be president. By the time he was a serious contender, Obama, Hillary Rodham Clinton and John Edwards had all coalesced around strikingly similar health plans that would, in broad outline, become Obamacare.

Are doctors prepared for impending changes to medical billing practices?
    Medical Daily
Medical billing is an intricate and international system of codes used by health care professionals — including doctors, private insurers, hospitals, Medicare, and Medicaid — when determining patients’ conditions and/or diseases as well as how much should be paid for treatments. In a change unrelated to the new health care law, public health officials have proposed switching to a new set of codes on Oct. 1, 2014. Already some doctors as well as health care IT specialists have raised a cry and are insisting on a delay. Though it may be argued their response is merely an "anniversary reaction" to the botched deadline for the federal health insurance website, their fears are justified in at least one sense.
