    As Heard on the Listserv
    Written by Dale A. Reigle
Year end is fast approaching. Patients are impatient, insistent they be seen (and have surgery) before the year comes to a close and their deductible renews. Staff is upset about changes in benefits due to the Affordable Care Act. The docs are not happy that I've spoiled their holiday cheer with news of bundled Ultrasound/Injection payments, new "X" codes, the SGR zombie that just won't die, ICD-10, and even more strict regulations on "data at rest" thanks to yet another security mandate.

In an upcoming issue we will provide a survey which is meant to uncover the new business models, necessary partnerships, and specific practices that help them achieve this tricky goal.

OA Braces: Did increased utilization contribute to billing code changes?
    Townsend Design
A growing percentage of Medicare patients with OA related knee pain and mobility limitations are being fit with off-the-shelf corrective knee braces. Following this increase in use, CMS has imposed new billing code requirements effective October 1, 2014. Statistics from 2012 indicate Medicare provided reimbursement for over 20,500 L1843 single hinge braces routinely prescribed for unicompartment OA. An additional 19,000 L1845 braces were reimbursed by Medicare. While these dual hinge (L1845) braces are prescribed for both ligament instabilities and knee OA, a majority of the L1845 braces paid for by Medicare are prescribed for older OA patients with joint degeneration.

    200 statistics on physician compensation
    Becker's Hospital Review
Between the new value-based care models, M&A activity and innovations in healthcare, it is valuable to track compensation to evaluate and compare how changes will affect physicians. Especially as fewer physicians strike out on their own and hospitals look to attract new recruits, compensation data provides a valuable benchmark.

Venture capital dollars pouring into digital health industry
    By Scott E. Rupp
Venture funding played a large part in advancing the work of digital health companies in 2014, accounting for a record-breaking $4.1 billion in investments, according to startup accelerator Rock Health. The level of investment surpassed the total of the three previous years combined. Despite these numbers, a variety of other, sometimes-conflicting investment levels were reported throughout 2014. But one thing is clear: There's a great deal of activity surrounding health IT, and more is expected to come in the near term from investors.
