Human Resource Management and the Physician-Patient Relationship
    Provided by AAOE
Strong human resource management (HRM) systems can provide the environment in which the healthcare workforce can be deployed and utilized effectively. Healthcare depends heavily on its people to carry out its mission. Because of this, a lot of practices suffer if their HRM is not working effectively. HRM is an important asset for any organization including orthopedic groups.

    ADVOCACY UPDATE

AAOE 'Engages' New Legislative Action Center
    Written by: Bradley Coffey, MA
The American Association of Orthopaedic Executives (AAOE) is proud to announce that in early January, AAOE will switch its legislative action center to Congressional Quarterly Roll Call's Engage advocacy platform.

Engage will allow AAOE to become your one-stop shop for information related to AAOE's government affairs program and the legislative and regulatory issues affecting orthopaedic practice management. With Engage, AAOE will also be better positioned to enlist advocates for state issues.

Navigating to our new legislative action center is incredibly easy! Simply go to www.orthoactivist.org.

Knee OA: Successfully Bracing Disproportional Legs
    Townsend Design
It's not easy to fit a standard size rigid OA knee brace on an abnormally shaped leg. Large thigh, small calf. Extra wide knee on a skinny leg. Disproportional legs are often the norm, especially with older or obese patients with OA related knee pain that reduces mobility and quality of life. While custom knee braces can be ordered, they are tougher to get authorized and reimbursed. The patient also has a more substantial co-payment because custom braces cost more to fabricate. So the majority of OA braces being fit in physician clinics are OTS (off-the-shelf) in standard sizes -- generally ranging from XS to 2XL.

Should physicians tailor patient engagement based on age?
    HIT Consultant
Quality of care has long been a primary factor in choosing a healthcare provider, but convenience and communication are also becoming key considerations for patients. Still, many physicians do not appear to be offering the digital engagement services that can meet those demands.

    mobihealthnews
Physician adoption of smartphones and tablets is higher than it’s ever been, but poor communication between IT departments and doctors keeps those devices from being effectively used, according to a new report from Spyglass Consulting. The report estimates that 96 percent of doctors have smartphones, but only 10 percent are actually willing to use their mobile devices to access electronic health records.

68 percent of new doctors prefer to be employed physicians
    EHRIntelligence.com
Newly-minted physicians have between fifty and one hundred job offers to sift through before the starch even wears out of their lab coats, according to a new survey by Merritt Hawkins, and the majority will choose employment with a larger practice, hospital, or health system over entering a solo private practice. As an ongoing shortage of physicians, driven in part by the burden of mandates such as meaningful use and the expense of EHR adoption, begins to put the squeeze on care availability, new trends in physician employment are changing the way healthcare is delivered in the United States.

Flex-IT Act reintroduced to shorten meaningful use, again
    By Scott E. Rupp
The Flexibility in Health IT Reporting (Flex-IT) Act of 2015, a reiteration of a bill introduced in Congress in 2014, has been proposed again this session. According to the statement released by the members of Congress who drafted the bill, H.R. 270 would ensure that healthcare providers receive the flexibility "they need to successfully comply with HHS's meaningful use program." In a nutshell, the Flex-IT Act allows providers the option to choose any three-month quarter for an EHR reporting period to qualify for meaningful use in 2015, as opposed to a full year, as is currently the case.
