    AAOE Webinar Spotlight
    AAOE
Mike McCaslin of Somerset CPAs — Healthcare Team presented a webinar entitled "The Future of Orthopaedics in a Volatile Health Care Environment" on Thursday, Dec. 5, 2013. Board member, Sami Spencer of Missoula Bone and Joint Surgery Center had this to say about the webinar:

I had many take-aways for Strategic Planning from Mike McCaslin's webinar on "The Future of Orthopaedics in a Volatile Health Care Environment," however my top three were:
      1. With the future formula of Value = Outcomes/Cost, we need to be in a position to drive this. What is our strategy for this external market?
      2. Several tips on service line co-management negotiations
      3. Good suggestions on internal strategies for growth as well as more efficient use of facilities and in-office ancillaries.
To access the webinar, you can visit the Live Learning Center. Webinars are free for AAOE Members.

    COMPLIANCE CORNER

How the Telephone Communication Protection Act Could Cost Your Practice
    AAOE
Effective Oct. 16, 2013, the Federal Communications Commission will be enforcing the federal Telephone Communication Protection Act (TCPA). The purpose of the TCPA is to protect consumers from the nuisance of receiving unsolicited robocalls to their home and cellular telephones. With the exception of an emergency, or unless prior express consent is granted by the consumer, autodialed phone calls and artificial or prerecorded voice messages sent to residences or wireless phone numbers for marketing property, goods or services is prohibited.

    WITHIN YOUR PRACTICE WALLS

Sen. Wyden unveils Medicare reform bill
    USA Today
Democratic Sen. Ron Wyden, who's likely to lead one of the Senate's most powerful committees soon, unveiled an ambitious bipartisan bill that would overhaul the way older Americans receive care under Medicare and rein in the program's soaring costs. Wyden, in line to become the next chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, introduced the measure on Capitol Hill along with three co-sponsors — Sen. Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., and Reps. Peter Welch, D-Vt., and Erik Paulsen, R-Minn.

Surveys were conducted online in September 2013 in a nationwide, multi-specialty sample of 1,666 physicians (average age, 44 years). Physicians were asked to rate the extent of their agreement with each of 15 different elements of engagement (on a 10-point scale).

New contractor for insurance exchange website faces quite a challenge
    By Pamela Lewis Dolan
After its three-year contract to build the federal health insurance exchange website culminated in a launch full of glitches and bad press, CGI Federal did not receive a contract renewal. Instead, the federal government is putting its faith — and more than $45 million — in Arlington, Va.-based Accenture Federal Services to oversee the HealthCare.gov website. After the myriad problems that plagued the site at the time of its launch, experts say Accenture has its work cut out for it over the next year.

    The 2014 Healthcare Environment
    AAOE
The Affordable Care Act is like the proverbial iceberg — 10 percent is visible above the surface but 90 percent is largely hidden from public view. 2014 will likely be a major transition year fraught with great difficulties for physician group practices. Managing an orthopedic practice is never easy, but next year could see a collision of many forces few of which will be positive for group practices.

Maryland receives 'okay' for healthcare overhaul that caps hospital spending
    Modern Healthcare
The state of Maryland is announcing a new initiative with the federal government to modernize the state's unique rate-setting system for hospital services. The agreement, which will be announced by state and federal officials, is designed to move Maryland away from reimbursing hospitals on a fee-for-service basis to an emphasis on prevention and quality of care.

Will the ACA ease or increase your malpractice threat?
    Medscape
In the 2400-page Affordable Care Act document, the term "medical malpractice" appears only 8 times. Its references cover medical liability protection given to medical professionals working in free clinics, and the creation of grants to the states for demonstration projects offering alternatives to current malpractice litigation. Yet despite these minimal references, the ACA could have a vast impact on malpractice.

Going paperless: Saving your practice from its medical record nightmare
    By Jessica Taylor
Stop me if this sounds familiar: A medical practice with about 50,000 patients has a paper chart for each. Like many small practices, a majority of the patients have had the same doctor for almost their entire lives — equating to a rather large paper trail. Each day, the employees of this practice put away about 200 charts, but frequently aren't able to finish due to volume. Paper charts and filing are what they consider their worst enemy. Can you relate? Do you feel their pain? Digitizing may be your new best friend.

AMA questions vendor readiness for ICD-10
    Government Health IT
Prominent among impending questions surrounding ICD-10 is whether or not technology makers will be ready, and the American Medical Association is among the groups to most recently express this concern. "While physicians will need upgrades to their software systems to accommodate the new code set, many may not receive them until well into 2014," the AMA wrote.

Moody's: Academic medical centers in relatively strong position
    FierceHealthFinance
Academic medical centers are generally in a stronger financial position than other kinds of hospitals, according to a new report by Moody's Investors Service. Moody's said the credit ratings of such hospitals are in particularly strong shape due to their size, strong market position and partnerships with top universities. Their median credit rating is A1, versus A3 for all not-for-profit hospitals.

Fighting the next Obamacare tech fail
    Nextgov
A head has rolled, but the body remains broken. In terminating CGI Federal's role in HealthCare.gov, President Obama finally "fired" one of the parties responsible for Obamacare's faulty website. That may appease the chorus of those calling on Obama to hold someone "accountable," but it does nothing to fix the underlying problem: the system for selecting contractors that picked CGI Federal in the first place.
