     AROUND THE INDUSTRY

ACL knee surgeries are on the rise
USA Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The number of ACL injuries has more than tripled since 2000, according to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, and it doesn't take a hit from a behemoth football player to cause it. ACL injuries are the most common type of knee sprain and they result more frequently from noncontact. More

    The future of medical records
The Atlantic    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Electronic medical records are not working like they should — or could — according to a new analysis in Health Affairs that revisited previous predictions for the EMR revolution and found disappointing results, in terms of efficiency, saved costs and patient care. But technology is "only a tool," as an expert who helped push for the adoption of EMRs said. "Like any tool, it can be used well or poorly." Here are some ways it could be done very, very well. Finding an economic model for high-tech, efficient healthcare
Los Angeles Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A nagging issue for healthcare reformers is the disincentive for many providers to adopt innovative approaches to care that improve health and cut costs. If you're paid a fee for each service you provide in your office, why would you invest in technologies and procedures that led to fewer billable services? One reason is to achieve better results, and that's good enough for some providers. But the Medicare program is supplying another rationale. More

States will be given extra time to set up health insurance exchanges
The New York Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The White House says it will give states more time to comply with the new health care law after finding that many states lag in setting up markets where millions of Americans are expected to buy subsidized private health insurance. Under the law, the secretary of health and human services was supposed to determine "on or before Jan. 1, 2013," whether states were prepared to operate the online markets, known as insurance exchanges. Patient group wants seamless transitions into Medicare
The Hill    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
An activist group representing Medicare patients urged state and federal officials to overhaul their Medicare enrollment systems as they implement the Affordable Care Act. In a report, the Medicare Rights Center warned that seniors will face harmful gaps in coverage unless officials streamline enrollment for Medicare, Medicaid and private insurance under the health law's state exchanges. 9 questions to ask before signing a cloud computing contract
Forbes    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
What's negotiable, what's not in a cloud computing arrangement? Cloud computing may be highly virtualized and digitized, but it is still based on a relationship between two parties consisting of human beings. And since it is still the new kid on the block, both providers and users are still trying to get their footing — and best advantage — in this evolving type of relationship. More

'Crowdfunding' sites pay medical bills, raise hopes
USA Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
More people are turning to crowdfunding sites to ask friends, and friends of friends, for help with medical bills, accident costs and much more. These can include situations such as fundraising for a loved one's cancer diagnosis, aftercare following an accident, fertility treatments or even replacing a pair of eyeglasses held together with duct tape. But, surprise: Strangers give, too. More
