    Survey: ICD-10 preparedness lacking
    By Pamela Lewis Dolan
As the deadline for switching to ICD-10 code sets inches closer, concern is growing that neither healthcare organizations nor insurers will be ready to go live by October. A survey by KPMG, found the majority of health plans and providers have allocated budgets toward ICD-10 readiness and had completed impact assessments

SOTU: Healthcare reform or musical chairs?
    MedCity News
President Barack Obama delivered a good State of the Union address, but he couldn't get past an inconvenient truth: He means well, but his schemes don't work. Democrats championed the Affordable Care Act to increase the number of Americans with health coverage, but their plan led to the cancellation of private plans for about 5 million Americans, according to the Associated Press. Unless they qualify for subsidies, many now face higher premiums, often for plans that limit access to doctors.

    200 statistics on physician compensation
    Becker's Hospital Review
In response to pressure to contain the cost of care while improving quality, hospitals and health systems have increasingly sought to acquire physician practices. Keeping track of compensation trends can help hospitals successfully attract physicians in order to expand and improve care. During the past year, some specialties saw notable increases in median compensation, while some of the highest paid specialties saw slight decreases in median base pay.

    CMS to test ICD-10
    MedPage Today
Mark your calendars — the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services announced it will conduct front-end testing of ICD-10 billing code submission between Medicare Administrative Contractors and providers. That means CMS will be testing how well the system works from the provider's side — that is, how easily and accurately providers can submit claims — using the new ICD-10 billing codes once they take effect in October.

Physician recruitment strategies get more personal
    HealthLeaders Media
At Baystate Health, the largest system in western Massachusetts, marketers identify the greatest attribute the organization has to offer physicians and build a campaign around it employing consistency, automation and tracking. As the physician shortage worsens, competition among hospitals to attract the best doctors will only increase in coming years.

Indiana malpractice insurance surcharge increasing by double digits
    ModernHealthcare
One doctor can make a big difference, but that's not always a good thing, as doctors in Indiana are finding out. Beginning April 1, the medical malpractice insurance surcharge the state's physicians pay to finance the Indiana Department of Insurance's Patient Compensation Fund will increase 13 percent. Hospitals are facing a 21.2 percent increase, according to a Department of Insurance bulletin.

New physician pay models must reward quality, outcomes
    HealthLeaders Media
Until recently most physician compensation models focused on straight salary guarantees or pure productivity-based models. Those trends are falling by the wayside. Physician compensation models are changing and evolving in practices and hospitals across the nation as providers transition away from fee-for-service reimbursements and toward value-based care and population health.

Attracting young adults to insurance exchanges proves difficult
    By Pamela Lewis Dolan
After a slow and rocky start, the state and federal health insurance exchanges seem to finally be taking off. By the end of December, enrollment surpassed the 3 million mark for state and federal marketplaces combined. But young adults — who many claim are key to the success of the Affordable Care Act — haven't been as eager as their older counterparts to enroll. Adults between the ages of 18 and 34 make up 40 percent of the potential market for exchange plans. But a recent report by the Department of Health and Human Services shows they only accounted for a quarter of total enrollees.

Healthcare spending still rising for states and cities
    The Washington Post
The Affordable Care Act, President Barack Obama pledged, would stem the rapidly rising cost of healthcare. Early indications suggest it has: The growth of total U.S. health-care spending ebbed in 2012 to just 4 percent. But for state and local governments, bending the cost curve hasn't happened. In fact, a new report from the Pew Charitable Trusts shows healthcare spending is consuming a greater percentage of state and local government budgets than at any time since the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services began collecting data.
