    Benchmarking survey now available
    AAOE
The all-important Benchmarking Survey is now available. The questionnaire has been designed to collect data on a variety of orthopaedic benchmarks to compare your practice to practices across the country. The new interactive reporting feature will allow you to choose the results based on the criteria you select. Your responses are completely confidential and will be reported in aggregate form only. The results of this research will be invaluable to administrators to find areas of improvement and to better manage their own medical practice by comparing to your peers.

If you did not receive your personalized survey link, please email Karen Eftekari at keftekari@verisconsulting.com. Participants will be entered into a drawing for $1,000 worth of gift cards.

Group size: 27 physicians, around 70 providers in total with midlevels and therapy

Best book ever read: "The Girl Who ..." series was awesome. Favorite classic novels would be tied between "Grapes of Wrath" and "A Tale of Two Cities." I also love to read business/work type books.
    Favorite movie: "Love Actually"
Other information: Find something that you love to do, and it doesn't feel like work. At least most days.

    Advocacy Council update
    AAOE
I think people might actually get sick of all the Advocacy Council Communication and hearing about our activities. Seriously, we are usually quite busy. This committee's timelines really are those of the legislators and regulators. It can be a whirlwind and then relatively quiet for weeks on end. We have awesome subcommittee chairpersons and this really helps us achieve so much more. The Council is also now using new tools to get our message out to legislators — with the help of our members. It really is an exciting time.

    AROUND THE INDUSTRY

Study: When it comes to spine surgery, there is no 'July Effect'
    HealthDay News
There's no proof to support the widely held belief that July is the worst time of year to have spinal surgery, according to a new study. Researchers from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., looked at whether there was any evidence of the so-called "July Effect," which is the notion that the arrival of new residents and fellows at teaching hospitals each July makes it the worst time of year to be a patient.

Medical device makers shift excise tax cost to healthcare providers
    Accounting Today
Under the Affordable Care Act, manufacturers and importers of medical devices would be subject to a 2.3 percent excise tax. Evidence suggests that some medical device manufacturers are shifting the burden of the medical device excise tax directly to American hospitals and other healthcare providers, an industry association charges.

Panel prods FDA to restrict hydrocodone
    CNN
An advisory panel to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration voted 19-10 to recommend placing tighter restrictions on hydrocodone, an ingredient found in popular prescription drugs including Vicodin, Norco and Lortab. If the panel's advice is adopted by FDA, it would put hydrocodone on par with prescription painkillers like oxycodone, morphine, and methadone — drugs with high abuse potential that can lead to severe physical dependence.

Proposed meaningful use stage 3 criticized as hasty and too strict
    American Medical News
Criteria floated for the final stage of the federal electronic health record incentive program would be extremely difficult for physicians to meet, causing those using the systems at their practices to fall short of requirements and exposing them to lower Medicare payments, organized medicine groups say.

Money fears vs. real benefits in Medicaid choice
The Associated Press via ABC News
President Barack Obama thinks his healthcare law makes states an offer they can't refuse. Whether to expand Medicaid, the federal-state program for the poor and disabled, could be the most important decision facing governors and legislatures this year. The repercussions go beyond their budgets, directly affecting the well-being of residents and the finances of critical hospitals.
