    ADVOCACY UPDATE

2015 State Issue Preview Now Available!
    Provided by AAOE
The AAOE Advocacy Council is proud to announce that AAOE's first ever state issue preview is available for free download by members and for purchase by non-members! This is an excellent tool for you to learn about your state government and the issues that could affect your orthopaedic practice in 2015 and beyond. All 50 states, from Alabama to Wyoming, are included in this publication representing over 360 hours of work by Advocacy Council members and AAOE staff.

The state issue preview marks the first truly collaborative product on state level government affairs between AAOE and the various state executives/orthopaedic societies. New York State BONES, the Texas Orthopaedic Association, the Virginia Orthopaedic Society, and Signature Medical Group (MO) made additional contributions to AAOE content in this new educational tool. We are grateful to everyone who has helped to make this publication happen and are looking forward to greater collaboration in 2016!

The book can be downloaded from the AAOE store.

Finding a job in healthcare: Bureaucracy
    By Catherine Iste
Once a year, I have the pleasure of being a guest lecturer for an ethics and social leadership class at a local university. The class participants include master's students in nursing and healthcare informatics. My topic is always the same: I am asked to demystify human resources. This year, the students' questions focused on the following: negotiating an offer, dealing with bureaucracy, performance reviews and terminations. Let's talk about how to deal with bureaucracy.

The biggest US healthcare challenges are management challenges
    Harvard Business Review
Few healthcare leaders would disagree that the U.S. healthcare industry needs to drastically change. But do we have leaders in place who have the courage to raise their hand and lead the charge? In the classical theory of disruption, reform from within is almost impossible. It is hungry, fast-moving new entrants that upend slumbering incumbents. But at athenahealth, we're seeing early signs of another possibility; more than any time in recent memory, provider groups themselves are preparing to do the disrupting.

CMS efforts to prepare for the new version of the disease and procedure codes
    U.S. Government Accountability Office
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, within the Department of Health and Human Services, has undertaken a number of efforts to prepare for the Oct. 1, 2015, transition to the 10th revision of the International Classification of Diseases codes, which are used for documenting patient medical diagnoses and inpatient medical procedures. CMS has developed educational materials, such as checklists and timelines, for entities covered by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 — that is, healthcare providers, clearinghouses, and health plans, which GAO refers to as “payers” — and their support vendors.
