  • MAKING HEADLINES AT AAOE THIS WEEK

Overcoming the 'Dirty Little Secret' — Part 2
    Provided by AAOE
In a previous article I discussed the "dirty little secret" that many medical groups suffer from, and recommended that all medical groups should ask and answer the following questions:
      1. How will the group make decisions? (Best answer: discuss and vote).
      2. What is expected of each physician once a decision has been made? (Best answer: adhere to and support the decision).
      3. What are a physician’s options if he or she doesn't like the decision? (Three options only: a. Do it anyway, that's group practice; b. Try to get it changed in the proper forum, but keep adhering to the decision until it is changed; or c. Self-select yourself out of the group).

What's the Favorite Item on Your Desk?
    Provided by AAOE
Probably close to 15 years ago I read an article about a teacher who had done a class project asking their students to write something about their fellow students. It was a one word description of what came to mind when they thought of that person. She compiled these, rewrote them for each student & presented it to each of them. The article went on to say that many of the students cherished those and even carried those positive comments around for years.

I did this in one office I managed. Had everyone write down their statements and then for each person I wrote them up & framed them. I gave them to each employee at Christmas time. As you can see, I still have mine and value & appreciate what employees had to say about me.

I've done this in several offices and believe people enjoy seeing the "positive" comments and it's encouraging and uplifts morale for all. I'm a firm believer that you can never say "thank you" too many times and this is a way of telling each person they're special and appreciated.

    ADVOCACY UPDATE

House Subcommittee Hears Testimony on ICD-10
    Provided by AAOE
The House Committee on Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health heard testimony today from healthcare stakeholders on the impending transition to ICD-10. Witnesses included Richard Averill from 3M Health Information Systems, Carmella Bocchino from America's Health Insurance Plans, Sue Bowman from American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), Dr. Edward Burke from Bayer Medical Group, Dr. John Hughes from Yale University, Krist Matus from Athena Health, and Dr. William Terry from Mobile Urology Group.

Lawmakers took different stances on the transition with Dr. Mike Burgess (R-TX) criticizing CMS' involvement in the transition. "When CMS flips the switch, something breaks," Burgess said in his statement. Gene Green (D-TX) argued that, "it's time to move forward without further delay." Subcommittee leadership also supported the transition date in 2015 with Chairman Joe Pitts (R-PA) stating that "ICD-9 is more than 30 years old and does not capture the data needed to track changes in modern medical practice and health care delivery."

Six of the seven witnesses, when asked, stated that they oppose further delay and advised Congress do the same. "Let me make it clear as chairman of this subcommittee, I support moving forward on ICD-10 rather than another delay," Pitts said.

    WITHIN YOUR PRACTICE WALLS

No crosswalk from ICD-9, but ICD-10 is on track for October
    By Scott E. Rupp
The "delay ICD-10" proponents have found themselves another piece of ammunition to use in their war against transitioning from the current ICD-9 coding system. The latest development in the never-ending fight is a new study from Vanderbilt University that suggests that mapping codes between ICD-9 and ICD-10 could be a problem. However, despite this information, ICD-10 likely will move forward in October.

For most physicians in most markets, the right patient is someone who is employed with a good job who also has good health insurance. Unfortunately, the world we live in is difficult and getting harder every day, especially for healthcare providers. Lawmakers oppose delaying October rollout for ICD-10
    Modern Healthcare
No further delays should occur in implementing the ICD-10 coding system for Medicare payments, said legislators from both sides of the aisle during a congressional hearing Wednesday. Six of seven healthcare officials who testified agreed. The lone dissenter was a doctor concerned that most private practice physicians are simply not prepared.
