Takeaways from ICD-10 and IT Readiness
    AAOE
Every month, a member of the Education Council provides a list of takeaways from the previous month's webinars that they would like to share with you. In January, the Peer to Peer webinar on ICD-10 and IT Readiness provided quite a few pearls and was very informative for all who participated. There has been a lot of focus on the documentation portion of ICD-10, however practices cannot forget about the IT portion and how critical testing is. Testing is not just with the clearinghouse for claims. It is also important to determine the need for software upgrades, server testing, including storage capacity and workstation testing. It is vital that any internal scrubbing/business rules based on diagnosis codes be mapped correctly. Lastly, practices should expect an increase in denials and for the financial impact these denials will cause.

If you missed this, or any other webinars, you can always access them on the Live Learning Center. Webinars, with the exception of the ICD-10-CM Webinar Series, are free to members. To learn about becoming a member, contact AAOE at 800-247-9699 or send us an email at info@aaoe.net.

Shift in markets pushes doctors to salaried jobs
    The Boston Globe
American physicians, worried about changes in the healthcare market, are streaming into salaried jobs with hospitals. Though the shift from private practice has been most pronounced in primary care, specialists are following. In 2013, 64 percent of job offers filled through Merritt Hawkins, one of the nation's leading physician placement firms, involved hospital employment, compared with only 11 percent in 2004. The firm anticipates a rise to 75 percent in the next two years.

Government: 3.3 million enrolled on health marketplaces, including more young people
    The New York Times
Nearly 3.3 million people have signed up for health insurance through the marketplaces established by President Barack Obama's healthcare law, and about one-fourth of them are young adults, the administration said Wednesday. The administration reported a modest uptick in the enrollment of young adults, a group avidly sought by insurers because they are usually healthier and need fewer costly medical services.

    Experience vs. expectation
    Modern Healthcare
Physician recruiters increasingly face a gap in physicians' professional outlook as health systems continue their doctor hiring binge. But the chasm in experience and expectations also brings a potential source of workplace tension, as doctors accustomed to managing their own business and putting in very long hours work side-by-side with doctors who want to work eight- to 10-hour days and have time for family, friends and other pursuits.

It is not very often we personally have the opportunity to be part of the public policymaking process. Outside of voting for elected officials or on ballot initiatives, our routine involvement in the legislative process is mostly limited to what we read or see in the media.

    States meld Medicare and Medicaid
    USA Today
They are a diverse group of low-income people who are disabled or elderly. Many have multiple chronic illnesses, or are battling depression or substance abuse. Most will need long-term care at some point in their lives. In the nearly 50 years since Medicaid and Medicare were enacted, the two health care programs — one for the poor and the other for the elderly and disabled – have remained separate, with different rules, duplicative benefits and conflicting financial incentives. The result has been wasted money and disjointed care for more than 10 million "dual eligibles," the Americans who qualify for both programs.

The 10 least expensive health insurance markets in the US
    Kaiser Health News and NPR
People in much of Minnesota, northwestern Pennsylvania and Tucson, Ariz., are getting the best bargains from the health care law's new insurance marketplaces: premiums half the price or less than what insurers in the country's most expensive places are charging. The 10 regions with the lowest premiums in the nation also include Salt Lake City, all of Hawaii and eastern Tennessee. This ranking is based on the lowest cost of a "silver" plan, the mid-range plan most consumers are choosing.

Searching for the best physician in the world
    By Clint Hubler
Often as I review physician CVs, I see accomplishments and rankings such as "top doctor in the U.S." or "best doctor in state." In conversations I also hear about prestigious awards and recognition. These types of things fall under the general category of "what people say about themselves." In my work as a physician representative, I'm always asking myself, "What makes a physician great?" I listen to what people say about themselves, but that's not my primary focus. I'm looking for something else. How do I find out if a physician is great?
