    AROUND THE INDUSTRY

22 advisory opinions issued by the OIG: 6 relevant to hospitals, surgery centers and other providers
    Becker's Hospital Review
HHS' Office of Inspector General issued 22 advisory opinions in 2012. Six of these contain guidance specific to hospitals, surgery centers and other providers. These are briefly described below. The first three advisory opinions closely address issues that surgery centers and hospitals are currently facing, while the remaining three address issues that may have peripheral importance, such as an advisory opinion concerning a radiology group that proposed to offer free pre-authorization services to physicians and patients which has potential application to hospital-based specialists and to independent practitioners.

Official: Enrollments for insurance start Oct. 1
    The New York Times
An Obama administration official told Congress that the government would be ready to enroll millions of people in private health insurance plans this fall, but senators of both parties expressed doubts. The skepticism voiced by four Democratic members of the Senate Finance Committee was striking because they had been deeply involved in writing the healthcare legislation that President Barack Obama signed in March 2010.

Medicare remains on GAO's high-risk list
    Healthcare Finance News
Despite improvements, Medicare has once again been placed on the Government Accountability Office's high-risk list — a designation the program has held since 1990. The GAO's high-risk report, which identifies government operations that are high risk because they have greater vulnerabilities to fraud, waste, abuse and mismanagement, or the need for transformation to address economy, efficiency or effectiveness challenges, is updated biennially.

Missouri House panel considers medical liability limits
    Insurance Journal
Missouri doctors urged a state House committee to reinstate liability limits for medical malpractice cases after the state Supreme Court struck down an existing cap. An upper limit of $350,000 for noneconomic damages such as pain and suffering was a major piece of Republicans' efforts in 2005 to curb liability lawsuits. Before then, Missouri had an inflation-adjusted cap of $579,000 for noneconomic damages against each defendant for each act of negligence.

EHRs: Where will your meaningful use bonus go?
    American Medical News
The question of what to do with meaningful use money is one that every practice needs to discuss early on, before each physician goes through the attestation process. Being on the same page not only will help a practice achieve its goals, which very well could be contingent on everyone receiving the maximum incentive amount, but it also could prevent hurt feelings.

    Becker's Hospital Review
For the 11th straight year, Rep. John Conyers Jr., D-Mich., has proposed the Expanded and Improved Medicare for All Act, legislation that would establish a universal, single-payor healthcare program akin to Canada's and other developed countries' healthcare systems. Rep. Conyers and 37 other House members introduced the bill, HR 676, which has been proposed in the House every year since 2003.
