    Physicians are Conflict Avoiders?
    Provided by AAOE
As any medical group looks to create or improve its system of governance, important concepts of group dynamics must be considered. Of most importance to medical groups is how individuals approach conflict management in group settings. Two researchers (Thomas and Kilmann) found that people react in one of five basic ways when faced with interpersonal conflict: by competing, collaborating, compromising, avoiding or accommodating. The five behaviors are arranged along two dimensional axis, from assertive to passive, and from cooperative to uncooperative.

    KEEPING UP WITH CONFERENCE

    Healthcare Compliance Pros
    Provided by AAOE
Healthcare Compliance Pros (HCP) is a 4th time exhibitor at the 2015 AAOE Annual Conference in Chicago. At HCP, we understand that the healthcare industry continues to face a significant amount of federal and state regulatory oversight. Much of the regulation requires ongoing education and training of healthcare workers and their business associates, specifically, in regard to federal HIPAA and OSHA regulations. Many healthcare organizations have struggled to find an efficient, simple, and cost effective way to stay current with these regulations and to keep their staff educated and trained. Having seen this frustration firsthand, HCP has created flexible, online solutions coupled with year-round compliance expertise to address these needs.

    WITHIN YOUR PRACTICE WALLS

Disrespectful healthcare cultures and risks to patient care
    By Christina Thielst
A recent PSQH article listed a dozen persistent medication safety gaffes that need to be resolved. Not surprisingly, No. 8 was "disrespectful behavior: a history of tolerance in healthcare." Disrespectful behavior includes bullying, threats, aggressiveness and even more passive forms such as ignoring and exclusion. These behaviors don't belong in any workplace, and certainly not in healthcare because of the risks created and the definite threat to patient safety. More than ever, teamwork and effective communication are needed in healthcare environments. Disrespect creates barriers to both of these.

Ten Things Every Orthopedic Practice Should Be Doing in the New Healthcare Environment
    Fulcrum Strategies
The past few years have been increasingly difficult for healthcare providers. One of the many reasons is because physicians have focused almost exclusively on the delivery of care while the insurance companies have focused on the delivery of profits. Simply put, physicians are getting out-managed, and it’s time that we finally put an end to it. What follows is an important list of ten things that every orthopedic practice should be doing in the new healthcare environment. Written by a former managed care insider, these crucial points can help practices to better position themselves for success in 2015 and beyond.

    Healthcare Finance
It’s Oct. 1 and the ICD-10 diagnostic coding vocabulary is in effect. Now what? According to one expert, that answer depends on how prepared you are and how much money your organization has on hand. “For some, the transition will be relatively seamless,” said Pam Jodock, senior director of health business solutions for HIMSS North America.

Millions of consumers who haven't filed their 2014 taxes and owe a penalty for not having health insurance will now be able to sign up from March 15 to April 30, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services said Friday. This "special enrollment period," which will include most of the estimated 6 million people who will owe a penalty, is available to those who attest they first learned of the tax penalty after open enrollment when they were preparing their taxes, said Andy Slavitt, CMS' principal deputy administrator.

The U.S. Justice Department has asked health insurer Humana for information related to its Medicare Advantage risk-adjustment practices, building off a whistle-blower case from several years ago, Humana said in a regulatory filing late Wednesday. The disclosure states that federal officials "recently" sent a request to Louisville, Ky.-based Humana asking for more information about how it submits and manages risk-adjustment data for Medicare Advantage beneficiaries.

Physicians and executives: Different species who must work together
    Hospitals & Health Networks
Jeff Goldsmith writes: John Gray's popular advice book of 1992, Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus, portrays the sexes as hailing from different planets. However difficult it is for men and women to communicate, at least they are of the same species. I'm not sure the same can be said for physicians and health care executives. I have believed for years that health care management programs have underprepared their graduates for the complexities of even understanding, let alone managing, medical professionals.
