    AROUND THE INDUSTRY

Insurers: Cuts to Medicare Advantage will hit poor, minorities
    The Hill
Cuts to Medicare Advantage will disproportionately hurt poor seniors and minorities, the health insurance industry said. America's Health Insurance Plans (AHIP) has pushed back hard against a proposed cut to private Medicare Advantage plans. AHIP argued that Medicare Advantage isn't only popular with seniors, but especially with low-income and minority seniors.

Early results of the meaningful use program for electronic health records
The New England Journal of Medicine
As of May 2012, a total of 62,226 eligible professionals had attested to meaningful use under the Medicare program. This represents 12.2 percent of the estimated 509,328 eligible physicians in the United States, including 9.8 percent of specialists and 17.8 percent of primary care providers. The attestation rate varied substantially according to state. Family practitioners had the highest number of attestations, and PCPs comprised 44.0 percent of all attestations.

Big health insurance rate hikes are plummeting
    The Washington Post
Researchers combed through data available from the 15 states that publicly post all requests for rate increases in the individual market. They found that, in 2009, 74 percent of all requests came in above 10 percent. By 2012, that number had fallen to 35 percent. Preliminary data for 2013, which only cover a handful of states, shows 14 percent of rate increases asking for a double-digit bump.

    Healthcare's new mindset
    PhysBizTech
It is clear that healthcare reform favors a consolidated healthcare industry. Beginning with the landmark Institute of Medicine publications, followed by the passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) in 2010, it has been clear that sustaining the healthcare industry meant restructuring payment models that would facilitate the restructuring of the care delivery system, eliminating excessive and wasteful spending from the system and paying for value of services, not volume of services. It is believed that the development of integrated delivery systems is the platform on which the restructuring of the industry will be possible.

5 ways to lower physician attrition rates
    Becker's Hospital Review
Physician recruitment is a difficult process for most hospitals and health systems. It requires months of planning and effort to get a physician in the door. So, after all of that work and effort, it is especially painful — and expensive — for the hospital or health system if the physician leaves the position soon after being recruited there.

Medicare drug costs to fall in 2014, but donut hole widens
    Reuters
There will be good and bad news next year for seniors using Medicare's prescription drug program. Overall, enrollees can expect a year of flat or decreasing Medicare prescription drug costs, according to data released by the federal government. The government said Medicare's per-beneficiary drug costs fell 4 percent in 2012. As a result, some of the most important numbers in the program's 2014 Part D will drop by roughly the same amounts.
