President Obama will propose boosting the National Health Services Corps from 8,900 a year to 15,000 a year over the next five years, as well as spending $5.23 billion to train 13,000 primary care residents over the next 10 years, in his budget. The budget marks the first time Medicare funds will be used to increase the number of medical residents, and it's the largest-ever proposed increase of the corps, officials said.

CMS won't budge on ICD-10 deadline
    InformationWeek
The ICD-10 deadline will not change, the administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services told HIMSS14 attendees at a keynote on Thursday. And the government should have used a systems integrator to oversee Healthcare.gov, said Marilyn Tavenner. Although providers and payers must be prepared to meet the Oct. 1 ICD-10 deadline, CMS may give "a hardship exemption" to facilities unable to achieve Meaningful Use 2, said Tavenner, a point she reiterated during a brief Q&A exchange with moderator Dr. Carol Steltenkamp of HIMSS.

Internal readiness, training are vital for ICD-10 success
    EHRIntelligence
There are two sides to the ICD-10 coin, and both are equally important to polish up if providers want to see a successful transition on October 1, 2014. On one hand, the technical capabilities to produce, store, transmit, and report on ICD-10 codes is the foundation of the big switch. On the other, the "people piece" of clinical documentation improvement and strong coding knowledge is critical to ensure that providers will get appropriately paid in a timely manner.
