Website: RVUs: The Key to Improving Your Reimbursement and Profitability
    Getting Paid
In the early years, medical practices only utilized RVUs to understand the Medicare fee schedule. Now the role of RVUs has expanded. RVUs have become the standard measurement in analysis of reimbursement and payer contracts, physician compensation and productivity, and practice staffing and operating costs. RVUs are not impacted by how you set your fees, by how much money you have collected or which payor the patient has or where the service was provided. Using RVUs to analyze your practice removes other variables that can make results confusing.

Insurers rush to provide Medicare Advantage coverage, despite Obama pay cuts
    Forbes
Though private health plans are complaining about proposed cuts to Medicare Advantage plans, more insurance companies are still flocking to the government health program to offer more products and services to seniors. The health insurance industry and its lobby are upset at the Obama administration's proposal to cut payments to Medicare Advantage plans next year, with reports saying a cut of 7 to 8 percent in payments could lead to higher premiums, reduced services to seniors or less access to the plans.

'Sequester' cuts to hit healthcare hard
    Los Angeles Times
As the Obama administration begins to implement $85 billion in cuts to federal spending this year, no part of the budget other than defense will take a bigger hit than healthcare. And the so-called sequester appears likely to have a disproportionate effect on areas of the health system already hobbled by years of retrenchment or underfunding, including public health and medical research.

Big health insurance rate hikes are plummeting
    The Washington Post
Researchers combed through data available from the 15 states that publicly post all requests for rate increases in the individual market. They found that, in 2009, 74 percent of all requests came in above 10 percent. By 2012, that number had fallen to 35 percent. Preliminary data for 2013, which only cover a handful of states, shows 14 percent of rate increases asking for a double-digit bump.

To fix US budget, reform medical malpractice law
    Bloomberg
The sequestration that is about to take effect imposes too much austerity too soon, does so in a nonsensical way, and yet does little to improve the long-term U.S. fiscal picture. Far more beneficial would be to make sure that the deceleration in health costs we have been enjoying continues. This is why medical-malpractice reform, although far from a panacea, is worth trying.

    The Wall Street Journal
Hospitals and health insurers are locking horns over how much healthcare providers will get paid under new insurance plans that will be sold as the federal health law is rolled out. Becker's Hospital Review
Work relative value units continue to be the most common measure when medical groups create production-based compensation plans for physicians, according to the American Medical Group Association's 2012 medical group compensation and financial survey. The AMGA defined a production-based plan as a plan where at least half of the medical group's compensation is distributed based on some type of work or financial contribution.
