Orthopedic Practice Efficiency — Creating a Higher Visibility for Your Orthopedic Practice
    Provided by AAOE
You may be young enough to remember watching Sesame Street as a child or as a parent, you were watched this popular PBS program with your toddler. My children loved Sesame Street’s Big Bird, who had a wonderful way of using alliteration that left a powerful impact on their moldable minds. "C" is for CAT. "D" is for DOG. With that same concept in mind, I would like to step under Big Bird's wings and introduce you to "P" is for POWER as you seek to create a higher visibility for your orthopedic practice.

    Technology Committee Update
    Provided by AAOE
The AAOE 2014 Technology Committee has been hard at work preparing updates to the listerv with our "Did You Know" articles. These articles are released to educate members on hot topics happening on the listerv and then are released to the public in the AAOE eNewsletter. AAOE Technology Committee member and Past-President, George Trantow, FACHE recently released an article titled "Monitoring the Medicare Bell Curve for E/M Visits matters?" This article also provided a few resources for the readers, relating to the hot topic.

The committee also began to transition from Dropbox to Google Drive. Dropbox was originally utilized to house all the tools and files exchanged in the AAOE listserv. The committee decided that Google Drive will streamline the housing of all AAOE listserv files, as well as allowing AAOE members to conveniently download the files.

    ADVOCACY UPDATE

Supreme Court of South Carolina Hears Oral Arguments on Physical Therapy
Written by: Fraser Cobbe, South Carolina Association of Orthopaedic Executives
Focusing on arguments over equal protection, the Supreme Court of South Carolina heard testimony last week on what makes physical therapy different from every other medical profession that is able to be employed in physician offices in South Carolina. The oral arguments in Joseph vs. SC Department of Labor, Licensing, and Regulation, were the latest development in the debate over integrated physical therapy services in the state. The South Carolina Orthopaedic Association has consistently supported efforts to allow physical therapists and physicians to enter into legitimate employment relationships.

The Oral Arguments before the Supreme Court lasted just over 40 minutes. The Supreme Court archives recordings of oral arguments before the Court. You can view the recording by clicking on the link below. Just scroll down to the bottom of the page until you see the Joseph case.

    http://www.judicial.state.sc.us/scvideo/indexArchived.cfm

With all of the briefs and oral arguments out of the way, there is no timeline for a decision to be made however we anticipate a ruling will be announced by the summer at the very latest.

    KEEPING UP WITH CONFERENCE

    Fulcrum Strategies
    Provided by AAOE
Have you ever wondered if your practice is getting reimbursed fairly by the payers? Fulcrum Strategies is a contract negotiation and practice marketing firm that was founded by Ron Howrigon, a former managed care executive. Ron became concerned with what he saw happening to physicians, particularly their declining reimbursement, and founded Fulcrum Strategies to provide local medical practices with leverage to succeed against the managed care companies. Since 2004, our firm has helped physician groups of all sizes and specialties across the country to successfully negotiate their payer agreements and significantly improve contract language and reimbursement rates. We've had great success negotiating on behalf of many prominent orthopedic groups nationwide. Our negotiators will provide free consultations to determine whether you are getting paid what you deserve or if there is potential for higher reimbursement.

Fulcrum Strategies has been a strong supporter of the AAOE Annual Conference for many years. Each year, we staff a booth in the exhibit hall, and our President, Ron Howrigon, presents educational sessions for attendees. This year, Ron will be presenting "Reimbursement Trends in a Post Healthcare Reform World" on April 28th from 10:15 - 11:15am. Attendees can expect to come away from this lecture with an understanding of each new physician payment model, how they work, and how these payment models will affect independent physician groups. The lecture will also explore strategies for successfully working under these new payment models. We encourage you to attend Ron’s session to learn more about this important topic. We invite you to visit us in Booth #913 to learn more about Fulcrum Strategies and discuss how we may be able to assist you. We look forward to meeting you at AAOE 2015!

Ten Things Every Orthopedic Practice Should Be Doing in the New Healthcare Environment
    Fulcrum Strategies
The past few years have been increasingly difficult for healthcare providers. One of the many reasons is because physicians have focused almost exclusively on the delivery of care while the insurance companies have focused on the delivery of profits. Simply put, physicians are getting out-managed, and it’s time that we finally put an end to it. What follows is an important list of ten things that every orthopedic practice should be doing in the new healthcare environment. Written by a former managed care insider, these crucial points can help practices to better position themselves for success in 2015 and beyond.

Finally: An end to malpractice litigation?
    Medscape
As every physician knows, our tort system is broken. Various solutions have been suggested over the years, only to fade away. But now, a promising new system for patient compensation in cases of medical error is being proposed in two states: Georgia and Florida. It makes sense for doctors and patients alike, and for our healthcare system as a whole. The bills would, if passed, transform the current medical tort system into an administrative system for redress.

Revenue in, less expenses out, equals profit — that is, physician income
    MedPage Today
During a recent conversation, a physician owner of a practice told me he'd not been drawing a salary over the last several months. How did he get into this predicament? The physician owner employs six providers. The practice had relocated to newer and bigger office space with a greatly enhanced in-office lab within the past 18 months. The practice acquired and implemented a new electronic health record — the first EHR for several of the providers — about 10 months later. During the transition from paper charts to the EHR, the practice added staff members (nursing, front desk and medical records).

States on edge about the future of health insurance markets
The Associated Press via ABC News
Mixed signals from the Supreme Court have states on edge about the future of health insurance subsidies for millions of Americans. And a summer decision from the justices leaves little time for backup planning. Many governors, especially Republicans, want the federal government to craft a contingency plan and at least one governor — in Pennsylvania — is pursuing a state exchange, which would make sure his state was able to receive the subsidy.

State medical board licensing: Challenges for telemedicine
    By Christina Thielst
The pressures to reduce healthcare costs and improve access have never been greater. Everything from the Affordable Care Act to the "Silver Tsunami" of aging baby boomers requires a transformation of the healthcare delivery system. While telemedicine and other virtual forms of medical care are quickly being recognized as powerful solutions to these challenges, barriers to more widespread adoption remain. One of these is the long and complex process of obtaining licensure for physicians in the various states where patients are located.
