Meaningful use incentives get chopped under sequestration
    EHR Intelligence
Anyone hoping that the EHR Incentive Program would be spared the axe after sequestration took hold will be disappointed. CMS has officially announced that the two percent reduction in Medicare will extend to meaningful use payments under the program. There was some hope that meaningful use would be spared due to the fact that the funding for the initiative was not in the general Medicare budget pool, but providers will in fact see a 2 percent reduction in reimbursement for all payments processed after April 1, 2013.

Beyond physician employment: Growing referral streams with physician liaisons
    Becker's Hospital Review
The trend of hospitals and health systems acquiring physician practices and employing physicians has surged in popularity recently. The nation's ranks of independent physicians shrunk from being 57 percent of physicians in 2000 to just 39 percent in 2012 and is projected to further drop to 36 percent this year, according to data from Accenture, illustrating major growth in the number of employed physicians.

House GOP debates changing Medicare sooner than they'd planned
    Los Angeles Times
As Rep. Paul D. Ryan readies the new GOP budget, House Republicans are debating whether to apply the party's proposed Medicare changes a year earlier than planned, when Americans who are now 56 reach retirement age. No decision has been made, and Ryan declined to address the internal debate. The party's earlier promise to keep Medicare unchanged for those 55 and older has bumped up against its vow to balance the budget in 10 years.

Zero tolerance for medical error? Think again
    MedPage Today
If you think that medical errors are a thing of the past, you are mistaken. It has been 14 years since the Institute of Medicine's report "To Err Is Human" shattered the myth that most, if not all, physicians are all-knowing practitioners with flawless skills and infallible judgment.

To fix US budget, reform medical malpractice law
    Bloomberg
The sequestration that is about to take effect imposes too much austerity too soon, does so in a nonsensical way, and yet does little to improve the long-term U.S. fiscal picture. Far more beneficial would be to make sure that the deceleration in health costs we have been enjoying continues.

CMS won't budge on ICD-10 deadline for 2014
    Becker's Hospital Review
As many provider groups continue to call for another ICD-10 delay, or to abandon ICD-10 altogether, CMS has said the current deadline of Oct. 1, 2014 will stay intact, according to a letter sent to AHIMA, a Chicago-based trade organization representing health information management professionals.

Study: Physician EHR-users not seeing return on investment
    FierceEMR
Although more physicians than ever are implementing electronic health records, many are not reaping a positive return on the investment, according to a new study in Health Affairs. Medicaid insurers gear up for profit
    USA Today
For industry titans such as UnitedHealthcare and WellPoint, as well as smaller, Medicaid-focused plans such as Molina, the Medicaid expansion is expected to bring significant enrollment and revenue growth. "This is several hundreds of billions of dollars of new market opportunity for these plans over the next couple of years," says Jason Gurda, managing director of healthcare at investment bank Leerink Swann in New York.

    Health reform: Costlier than planned?
    MedPage Today
Higher-than-expected costs for the Affordable Care Act's preexisting condition risk pool are a sign that the law will cost more than first expected, according to some lawmakers and analysts. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services told states that it was suspending enrollment in the Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan, a program created under the ACA to help provide health coverage to those with preexisting medical conditions before other aspects of the law take effect in 2014.

States balk at $15 billion Obama healthcare 'tax'
    The Hill
A newly unveiled component of President Barack Obama's healthcare law forcing insurers to pay annual fees is sowing angst in state capitols, where officials view the provision as a $15 billion tax that could disrupt Medicaid programs and other services. The health insurance providers fee, included in the healthcare reform law over the objections of congressional Republicans, is designed to raise tens of billions of dollars in the coming years.
